What a telehealth consultation from Sydney involves: the NSW rules, your Primary Health Network, local hours and what to have ready.
Sydney by telehealth
LeafLine Clinic holds consultations with patients located in Sydney by secure video or telephone, with AHPRA-registered Clinicians and no referral needed. Sydney is the second-largest urban area in Australia on the ABS's 2025 estimates, and five Primary Health Networks share it. On the ABS's preliminary estimate for June 2025, 5,219,674 people live in the Sydney urban area, an increase of 361,069 people since 2021.
Patients in Sydney take their consultation from home or from a private room at work. The appointment runs the same way in every suburb, by video or telephone, and the trip across Sydney drops out of it.
The NSW rules for a patient in Sydney
In New South Wales the state layer is narrow. A NSW Health authority is needed where the Clinician considers the patient drug dependent, and otherwise the federal approval is the one your Clinician applies for. The state’s new medicines Act commences on 5 November 2026, and from that date NSW Health takes state applications through SafeScript NSW.
Before prescribing, your Clinician checks SafeScript NSW, the state’s real-time prescription monitoring system, which shows recent supply of monitored medicines.
The federal side is the same everywhere. Our guide to getting a prescription through SAS-B explains the TGA approval, and if you are moving from another clinic, the New South Wales changing-clinics page covers what transfers and what does not.
How a consultation works from Sydney
-
Check your eligibility
The eligibility questionnaire is confidential and comes before any booking or payment. LeafLine Clinic consults with adults only, aged 18 and over.
-
Book video or telephone
Choose video if you have a camera and a steady connection, or telephone if you would rather. Both reach the same Clinician and run the same way. Support and bookings run 9am to 7pm local time during standard time.
-
What to have ready
Keep your Medicare card, your home address and a list of what you currently take, with doses, within reach. Letters or results from other practitioners help if you have them. A closed room or a parked car gives you the privacy the conversation needs.
-
After the consultation
Your Clinician decides whether any treatment is appropriate. Where the medicine is not on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods, they apply to the TGA under Special Access Scheme Category B, and to the NSW health department if the rules above require it, and they prescribe nothing until every approval is back. Follow-up reviews are held by video or telephone too.
Primary Health Networks in Sydney
Sydney is divided between 5 Primary Health Networks: Central and Eastern Sydney PHN, Northern Sydney PHN, Western Sydney PHN (WentWest), South Western Sydney PHN and Nepean Blue Mountains PHN (Wentworth Healthcare). Which one covers you depends on your suburb, and the Australian Government's PHN locator will tell you.
Primary Health Networks are independent organisations funded by the Australian Government to plan and commission primary health care in their regions. They do not hold consultations themselves, and LeafLine Clinic is not part of, funded by or endorsed by any of them.
